I have a dialup internet connection. Is there any way to reduce the frequency at which the BOINC client demands a network connection? The frequent appearance of these pop-up messages is wearing me thin. What effects would ignoring these messages have on the eventual completion of these work units?

Boinc 5.2.x: Boinc Manager, Options, Options, General, use Frequency Reminder slider at 120 minutes.

Boinc 5.4.x and above: Boinc Manager, Advnced, Options, General, use Frequency Reminder slider at 120 minutes.

There is no real off option, it's 1 minute, 60 minutes and 120 minutes.
If you don't want reminders, set your Network Activity option to Suspended when you aren't around.

How does one set network connections to suspended? If I do so, will I have to change it back if I want it to connect when I do happen to be online?

If I happen to ignore the reminders, what consequence will that have on the conpletion of the work units?

Hi LuDean

In my version of boinc I can suspend network activity by right-clicking the icon in the system-tray (bottom right of screen) and selecting. Or I can choose from the options in Activity in the boinc manager. Yes, when I want my project to trickle I have to allow network activity again.

You can see whether your project(s) have finished their contact with the server by looking at the boinc messages.

Suspending network activity does no harm. I keep it suspended most of the time because I'm running a very long workunit and if it crashes on my machine I don't want the server to know. Of course, if you're running short a workunit which finishes while you're offline, you'll have to wait for the next job.

You should in any case suspend your workunit via the icon or the Activity menu whenever you do housekeeping jobs like scans of any sort, program upgrades, defragging.
