Before upgrading OS, is there anything one should do?
Has BOINCManager and all been verified on the new MacOS Sierra?

I installed macOS Sierra/BOINC 7.6.33 and the combination have been running with no issues for approximately 16 hours. The applications I support at this time are:
    WUProp@home
    Collatz Conjecture

There's a thread in this forum saying idle detection doesn't work in Sierra. Could either one of you check if that is indeed the case?

For me, with iMac (27 inch, Late 2013), the BOINC did not work after upgrade, but appears to be working alright after a re-install of boinc_7.6.22_macOSX_x86_64.

I'll check on the idle detection question later today and report back here and the original thread.

Idle detection appears to be working in my setup, as of right now. I'll continue to monitor the behavior and report any issues.

The only problem I have is that the hot corners do not work right after sierra upgrade. They will start the screen saver but then kick off like the mouse was moved.

And it only happens on the Boinc client, all other screensavers work as before.

I updated to macOS Sierra and I noticed that my internet isn't working. I found this thread
If anyone have the same issue, you can try that and see if it helps. http://www.cydiageeks.com/fix-slow-wi-fi-issues-macos-sierra-upgrade.html

Hey everyone,
I recently moved to Sierra and BOINC won't work (can't compare with before the install since I wasn't using it then).
When I start BOINC manager, the main window opens and simply reads "data reception ongoing" (loosely translated, since my computer is in Italian). Nothing ever goes any further than that. I later switched to version 7.6.33 with no difference. I tried deactivating my firewall, to no avail. I had a look at the ports of my computer (see attached picture if helpful).
I am currently running macOS Sierra 10.12.1. Has anyone encountered a similar situation?
Thanks in advance,
Drounal

As no one is around at the moment, (and the Mac developer has moved on to a new job), perhaps a general solution may help.
Try installing BOINC again, which should result in you getting a "repair" install, with new instructions.

Apart from this thread and the one just below, the only mention of Mac problems that I've seen recently are for Mavericks, Yosemite.and El Capitan. All of which, I think, were minor.

Thanks for the message! But.... what's a "repair" install? I just reinstalled (the beta version) and it seems like every other time I reinstalled (this time I hadn't deleted my copy). Is there something special to do for a repair install or was that it? I'm still at square one :S

Have you tried explicitly allowing port 31416 in the firewall? I think some firewalls don't really go away when you disable them without rebooting afterwards.

Is there anything useful in the client's logs? The logs are in /library/Application Support/BOINC Data in stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt .

Thanks for the reply, Juha! Unfortunately, mac's firewall only allows app-per-app authorizations. I have allowed connections for BOINC and rebooted, to no avail. It seemed like there could be a way using pfctl but I am not familiar with it.
And, no, nothing either in the logs. The four files that I find (stderrgui, stderrscr, stdoutgui, stdoutscr) are all empty.
Any ideas?

I think you looked at wrong directory for the files. The ones you found are made by Manager and screensaver which are somewhere in user's home directory. Check the directory from the root of the drive.

BOINC is made of several components. The parts that matter here are client (program name 'boinc') and Manager ('boincmgr'). When you say you allowed connections for BOINC does that include both?

Do you have some antivirus program running?

I am slightly confused. The files that I mentioned are indeed in the user directory but that's the only BOINC directory I have; there is no such directory in the Library/Application Support located at the root. Also, when I search for boinc, I can only find one application called "BOINCManager", not the two you mention. Any ideas?

No, I do not have an antivirus running.

Weird.

Ok, make sure boinc is running (e.g. ps or lsof like above). Then check what files it has open and where (lsof -p pid_of_boinc).

Ok, that's was BOINC Manager. Perhaps useful information some other time but not now. What I was interested in was BOINC client which goes by the name 'boinc'. Normally you might not see it in filesystem because... uh, Apple, but it should be visible as process.

Also, notice that the Manager is using /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data as the current directory. Maybe the directory is hidden and you can't see it without toggling some option in your file browser.
