I'm having issues with my Surface Pro 4 and the touchscreen, and something just happened that's made me wonder if there could be an issue relating to BOINC so I thought I'd see what people here though.

The issue is the Surface Pen stopped working, then when it started working again the touchscreen stopped working. Then it came back 'on' but there was a 'dead' strip down the centre-right of the screen, but the pen now worked fine everywhere.

Anyway, I've just had to reset the entire PC and start again, and the screen worked fine. I installed BOINC and had it up and running while I reinstalled all my apps etc and suddenly I noticed the touch screen had completely stopped working.

I started closing everything down and when I exited BOINC I immediately noticed the touch screen had started working again. I opened everything back up, including BOINC, and it's working - for now. The other things open are the Windows Store, Steam and Good Old Games clients.

I'm wondering if there's something in BOINC that could possibly effect it - but I can't imagine what.

Microsoft said it sounded like my copy of Windows 10 had been corrupted and if it happened again the machine would need replacing (again - had to replace it for something else before).

It's just the fact that it switched back on so quickly after exiting BOINC that made me wonder if it was a software issue of some kind.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello,

I have the answer for you. As you expected, it doesn't have anything to do with BOINC, it's just a Surface thing. I went through several returns/exchanges of my S4 before I found a way to fix the issue properly. Follow the instructions at

http://blog.jamesbayley.com/2015/12/19/how-to-fix-corrupt-windows-10/

and you'll be good to go. I have had to do this with about a dozen surfaces at work, and it has fixed the issue every time, so I have high hopes that this will work for you as well.

Thanks for this. I'm due to get another replacement now so fingers crossed it won't happen again but I've bookmarked your page so I can refer back to it if it starts to happen again. Looks like our symptoms were different though but certainly the underlying corruption looks like a similar thing. Thanks again!
