I have a problem…. This morning I was on the wire with Microsoft in an effort to resolve an issue… my issue. When I stop using my machine for a period of time, say while I am asleep or watching TV, and then return to it the machine is locked up. By locked up I mean some of the applications I can get into: Mail, File Explorer, but others I cannot. To get into the Internet explorer I must restart my machine. To get into Word I must restart my machine. I am running a 6 core i7 5820K CPU 3.30 GHz and 64 G bit of RAM with a 64 bit operating system. After the obligatory Microsoft efforts to discover the problem they came to the conclusion that SETI was the problem and that it might not be configured for Windows 10. As it ran flawlessly under WIN 7.1 it was a reasonable guess. So here I am folks… is it possible that SETI for home users is not compiled for WIN 10? That was Microsoft’s conclusion and thus here I am asking you for a resolution to the issue as I am just a bit weary of restarting my machine every time I want to use it. Please send me an Email on the resolution: email address redacted... thank you

Mike

We're not Seti, we're the BOINC forums.

For help with this, best post it on the Seti forums, if you have a RAC more than 1, post in Number Crunching.
If your RAC is lower than 1, post in the Windows Help Desk forum.

You can check your RAC in your Seti account, the value for Recent average credit.

Also, never post your email address on these or other forums. Spam bots read here as well.

I don't know if BOINC induces it in any way (projects included) but I have seen Win10 tell me that certain features have stopped working and needed to log off and back on again or restart for them to work. Cortana is a big one I have seen this happen with. There was one tonight in my daughter's room, but I didn't pay enough attention to which app as it was due for a restart anyways. If I notice it happen while any specific project is attached or running, I will try to report in case it helps in some way.

I have seen "Battery Meter" as one of the offending apps which nictitates a restart... I find this curious as my machine is custom 6 core Intel... unless it is the battery on the MoBo there is no other battery on the system... Any Ideas? Microsoft suggested that I remove BOINC which I have done and the need for restarts has stopped. I have been crunching SETI at home since 1998 or so and this is the first time that I have had this type of problem. There have been other issues in the past but none of this type. Microsoft suggested a recompiling of BOINC to work with Windows 10.

I come here once every two or three years. I don't bother to know all of the nuances of your message board. If I have a problem I want a place to post it... not troll all over the place looking for a spot. If I offended your personage I am sorry and I do apologize but the simple truth is we here in the ether crunch your numbers... I know your BOINC but I am SETI and am a PART of BOINC not BOINC only.... Fact is I don't give two hoots for BOINC I do give two hoots for SETI and it is SETI that I am having a problem with. So lighten up and give us poor mortals a break will you please...

Talking about lightening up, do know that I am a volunteer just as you are. I only have the administrator title so I can do extra things against spammers. There's really no need to go full on against me for whatever your reasons. I've re-read my post and don't see what I wrote that gave you the right to post in the way you just did.

You have a problem with the Seti application, so best post about that on the Seti forums, because when you do so people willing to help can look up your system and check for possible errors the application is throwing.

As for Windows 10, I find it the worst piece of crap ever to graze this world, worse even than Millennium. If MS' only solution to computers hanging is to uninstall all third party applications, you should be seeing the light by now, especially since everything worked without a flaw under Win7.

I was under the impression that insults and profanity were not allowed on this board. Also as Microsoft has many Apple people on board it is not a surprise to me that you think it is as you say crap. I ask that you find resolution to the problem and leave the petty mellow dramatics at home where they belong. I have experienced a problem> I am a long term SETI user and I come to this place for resolution not anger at me for doing so.

oh well...I give up. I am back at microshaft trying to resolve the issue. I just received a "task host windows: was keeping me from restarting this and the "battery meter" are my problem. The answer desk at microshaft keeps dumping me I suspect that this is a problem they cannot handle under Win 10. SO Win may be the biggest piece of crap ever but it is used by about 80% of the population. As an old System 5 guy I understand why Lenis people hate Win anything. But what am I to do I refuse to drop dead and this is an interesting problem. Sorry for the sarcasm I am just a bit peeved at the whole thing.

Michael, did you do a "clean install" for that Windows 10?

If you did, then skip all this below...

My old message from another topic:

(What I've seen so far the "upgraded only" Windows 10 systems (not yet gone through a clean install) have had a giant spectrum of all sort of strange problems. Many many times those problems have vanished after a clean install.

I personally consider all the "upgraded only" 10 installations to be a completely useless environment for doing anything serious with the computer. Only after giving 10 a "clean install" there will be a healthy, reasonable system to begin with.)

For everybody out there who are thinking about upgrading to Windows 10:

If the installation still is an in-place-upgrade from 7/8 to 10 I can almost guarantee there will be extra problems sooner or later. ALWAYS do a clean install. Without that, the system stability is destined to be a joke.

Well - then how DO I make your clean install ?

I made the upgrade over windows update - so I have no install media .. and I'm not really happy having to download the iso (again) , write it to DVD / USB , and having to reinstall about 50 applications and games again - where I know that for about half of them I dont have a disc anymore nor an ISO or installer ...

on the other hand - my windows 10 (home 64 german) runs anything fine, that the previous win 7 did - including boinc ... so I really don't care about the small portion of tools that stopped working due to incompatibility (o&o defrag 18 ... won't start, update or even de-install without a patch from o&o software - but they made that patch and O&O defrag 19 runs fine ...)
So my impression is - it comes down to the support of the software developers if you have problems or a more or less flawless experience with windows 10

Just as with Windows 7, you can do an in-place repair installation of Windows 10, from within Windows 10. You do need the Windows 10 ISO for that, but will not lose any of your data, settings, files and games.

To see how to do this, see http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

Other more or less intrusive repairs can be done through the Push button reset.
