How can I tell that Boinc is actually doing something? I suspect it isn't (it should have run all night with 100% of the CPU and up to 100 GB of disk space — assuming I understand the preference settings correctly).

Boinc Manager: Version 7.2.42 (x64)
wxWidgets Version: 2.8.12

Project: SETI@home
_____________________

In the BOINC Manager, under "Projects" it show the project "SETI@home" and "Work done for this project: 0".

In the upper window pane it shows
"Elapsed: ---"
Remaining (estimated): 03:21:24
and the progress bar has "0.000%" to its right.

The top command shows "boincmgr" but noting that looks like the boinc client (I assume its name would be of the form "boinc...").

The Linux Task Manager shows the boincmgr but not the client (i.e. same as top).

When I try to start the client manually (/etc/init.d/boinc-client start), the following is displayed:

* Starting BOINC core client: boinc [ OK ]
* Setting up scheduling for BOINC core client and children:
renice: failed to set priority for 2241 (process ID): Operation not permitted
renice: failed to set priority for 2241 (process ID): Operation not permitted

Running the command "whereis boinc-client" displays:

boinc-client: /etc/boinc-client /usr/lib/boinc-client /usr/share/boinc-client

So what are your preference settings?

Under Linux you have to start the client separately and first before starting the manager. The Manager doesn't (always) auto-start the client.

I got to thinking about this. The client runs as a daemon, so I logged in as root and then stopped and started the Boinc client.

Then Boinc started running :-)

Clearly I'll have to look at the autostart, but that should be fairly straightforward.

I got it running (see my own reply to my post). The task is now 55.0% complete.

Although I stopped and started the client while the manager was running, when I fix up autostart, I'll make sure I start the client first.

Thanks for the fast response.

Don't always run the client as root, that isn't very secure. Do try to make sure that the user who installed it can run it. I'm sure one of the Linux gurus will come by at one time and can take you on the route to see if all permissions are set correctly.
