-Crunshing since 1999...
-90% of all credits go to this moneymaking schema and you are commercializing the boinc users...that is not acceptable.
-This coinproject simply does not belong here and as a consequence the support by the National Science Foundation, from the science perspective, is wrong.
-so stop this Bitcoin crap

It's open source software, people can use it for anything they want. There's not much the BOINC developers can do other than to ask nicely. Also, BOINC projects didn't start assigning credits until 2004 or so, before that we're talking about SETI Classic.

While I don't think the credit assigned by BU is really on parity with what a BOINC cobblestone was originally outlined to be (a similar debate raged regarding GPU credit) I do appreciate that they are providing financial support for other BOINC projects and stats sites. That's what I'm personally interested in, I have not and probably won't do any mining for myself--and I won't be spending any money on hardware that can only mine bitcoin or other crypto currency. It's an interesting experiment, but I'm not sure how well it will fare in the long run.

Furthermore, Bitcoin Utopia is not the only (or the first) project to bring currency mining or money generation to BOINC. Regardless of what people feel about the issue, it's probably not going away so long as currency mining remains viable. But, I agree that it takes some valuable resources away from scientific endeavors. But, I hope that some promotion of BOINC in general can help to increase the computational power available and offset any loss due to BU or other endeavors.

The biggest thing to remember is that you, the user, has more of a say in this than the developers do. You can decide to try to get as many people behind you to either get that project to change their credit rates, or to completely boycott the project. Boycotting projects (over credits) has been done before and found to be a pretty good method of telling the project they're doing something wrong: when no-one runs their data anymore, they'll feel that immediately.

You have the freedom to gather as many people behind you on these forums. Just as long as you stay civil towards the project, its people, the BOINC developers and people who think differently, there shouldn't be too much in your way.
