I am using BOINC 7.4.36 (x64). It was working fine.
I was waiting 2 days for SETI@home to give me projects.

I decided to upgrade to BOINC 7.4.42 just in case SETI required
a new version.

I downloaded the program from the NOTICES page and from the download link
on this homepage.

I exited my current running BOINC manager.

I ran the install.
Nothing happens, other than mouse cursor brifely going 'busy' then that is
all.

I am using Windows Vista x64 and I am not thrilled about using Vbox just for
one program. I just want to use what I already have successfully used.

No processes of BOINC exist in task manager.

I can't get new tasks for SETI and I can't upgrade.

I'm using Windows XP Provessional (32 Bit, SP3+last patches) with Boinc 7.4.36 (x86). I see this same behavior. I used the Start, Run, Browse..., Open. When I click on the final "OK" button, the Run window disapears for a few seconds then reappears with the path/file information in place, but no new Boinc installed. This is very repeatable on my systems.

I used the Start, Run, Browse..., Open.

Do not run the installer while it's downloading. Download first, save to a place on your hard drive, then when the installer is in, (double-)click it to start it.

Seti is out of work, has database trouble (again) and is in the long process of repairing said database. That may take till the end of next week, and during that time there is no work, only possible resends for those lucky few receiving those.

Keep an eye on the Seti News forum and Seti Technical News forum for more news on this.

I am using Windows Vista x64 and I am not thrilled about using Vbox just for one program.

Just to make sure you didn't download a corrupt installer, please download it anew. This is the version without VirtualBox: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.42_windows_x86_64.exe. Make sure to download the file, save it to disk and only when it's been fully downloaded, (double-)click it to start the installer.

No processes of BOINC exist in task manager.

Which is normal if Seti is out of work and your BOINC hasn't been able to get work from Seti for two days. This will stay normal for the rest of the week, unless you either get one of the resends, or you decide to add another project.

You must understand that I did download from this site 3 times.
Each time the download was completed.
Each time the file size is the exact same.
I only downloaded from this site.
I never install until the download is complete.

Size of file on download shows 8.8Mb

On the computer it is 8.75. But still, it is not installing.
It acts like autodetect is confused or closed it.

Anything in Windows Event Viewer?
Start->Search, type Event, wait for Windows to find Event Viewer, (double-)click that.
Wait for it to load.
Windows Logs->Application.
or Windows Logs->System.

What about any other program's installer? Can you download anything else and install it? E.g. http://notepad-plus-plus.org/repository/6.x/6.7.5/npp.6.7.5.Installer.exe

What kind of anti-virus and other anti-malware protection do you have on that system? Isn't that interfering?

Are you installing BOINC as a system administrator?

Nothing in logs.

Yes, I can install everything else I download.
I just downloaded java, yesterday. No issues on installing.
I turned off firewall during installation.
I am the administrator and always install with privileges.

I will just wait for the next release.

I have no AV installed.
I turn off UAC when I install Windows. I hate it.

I will wait for another version.
My seti, enigma and astrolab are all running on 3 computers with the earlier
version and are working great

I am having the very same set of issues as reported here. I am unable to upgrade. I tried to uninstall. That failed. I then tried to re-install and the installer continually prompts for the MSI and when directed to it claims that the MSI is corrupt.

Boinc 7.4.42 will not install. Each attempt using multiple BOINC.msi files fails with "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." I get the same message when I try to uninstall! I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The program file directory for BOINC is now empty.

For BOINC to install on a system where there was BOINC before, it needs to find the old .msi installer file. This message is a sign it is no longer there. Now you have to use a program/registry cleaner or fetch the exact same old installed BOINC version. That may work to get the old off before the new can be installed.

Edit: Seems no one clicked on the link to a detail How To FAQ in the last Ageless post.
